May 7th Creative Floristry Workshop with Atlas Obscura: Supply Fee

60.00

Just in time for Mother’s Day, the Seattle Obscura Society will explore the art of floristry with Sara Jane Camacho of Thatch Floral and her mom Kentucky farmer-florist Sara Brown of Meadowview Flowers. Hosted at Slab Art Studio, a modern design studio that uses salvaged trees in its elegant and minimalist furniture designs and woodwork, the workshop will take place in the the Old Rainier Brewery building in industrial SoDo.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will create a spring bouquet in collaboration with a design partner. We'll draw from seasonal blooms, including ranunculus, anemones, specialty tulip varieties, snow ball viburnum, and hyacinth. Sara Jane and Sara will do a floral design demonstration at the start of the session to model working together on an arrangement. Participants will then pair up and combine their creativity. Makers will be encouraged to lean on their workshop partner for placement advice and color palette decisions to arrive at a shared sense of a finished bouquet. This co-facilitated workshop encourages co-designing something beautiful in collaboration with a friend, partner, sibling, parent, or child.

Sara Brown will also give background on the “field-to-vase” movement and its focus on eco-conscious locally-grown domestic flowers. With a spotlight on local agriculture, she will discuss shopping sustainably and seasonally to reduce your carbon footprint.
